A dog's heart beats between 70 to 120 times a minute, compared with a human heart which beats 70 to 80 times a minute.
The common belief that dogs are colour blind is false. Dogs can see colour but it is not as vivid a colour scheme as we see. It is much like our vision at twilight.
The oldest dog that has been reliably documented was an Australian cattle-dog named Bluey. He was put to sleep at the age of 29 years and 5 months!
I bet you didn't know that two dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic
Most people know that a puppy is born blind and toothless but did you know they are born deaf. They begin to see at 2-3 weeks, get milk teeth at 3-7 weeks and after a few weeks start to develop their hearing.
Dogs have 42 teeth.
Do dogs dream? If you look at your dog while it's sleeping, sometimes you'll see its eyes move and twitch under its eyelids. Humans do this too, and we definitely dream. So researchers are almost positive that dogs have dreams too.
Dogs hearing is a lot better than ours. They hear high-pitched sounds (like some insects make), that we cannot even detect.
Stroking a dog on a regular basis is said to help you reduce stress levels, tension and reduces blood pressure, and the dog loves it too.
The Poodle's "haircut" was to improve their swimming abilities. The pom-poms were left to keep their joints warm !
Dogs have a visual range of 250 degrees compared to the human range of 180 degrees.
Greyfriars Bobby was a famous Skye Terrier immortalised in the Disney movie of the same name. In 1858 a man named John Gray (Old Jock) was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard, in Edinburgh. This loyal dog slept on his master's grave for the next 14 years until his own death. A statue commemorates this most loyal of dogs.
Each year on April 8th at a ceremony in Tokyo's Shibuya railway station dog lovers do homage to the loyalty and devotion of an Akita dog called Hachiko. Hachiko was the loyal and faithful pet of Dr. Eisaburo Ueno, a professor at Tokyo University. On May 21st 1925, when Hachiko was eighteen months old Dr Ueno died. The next day and for the next nine years, Hachiko returned to the station and waited for his master before walking home, alone
Poisoning of dogs by chocolate is not as uncommon as you might think. Chocolate contains theobromine, found in cocoa beans. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's in all human chocolate and it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs. It's true that the odd bit of chocolate will probably not cause any toxic reaction but there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, dog size and chocolate (theobromine) concentration. What happens if your dog steels all that chocolate on or under your christmas tree...well your dog will get a toxic reaction from the poison it has eaten so you should contact your vet straightaway. The point is you don't leave bottles of medication within reach of children and you shouldn't leave amounts of chocolate within reach of your dog. Just type something like "Chocolate Toxicity" in any search engine to find out the facts and some sad truths.

Meet Basil, he's a small cross breed and is approx. 1 year old. Basil is very timid with strangers at the moment but once you gain his trust he is a very loving little boy. Basil is another unclaimed stray who is looking for a loving forever home.
Update on Basil (the day after he came into our care)
Basil, just loving every friend he meets.
Josh
My name is Josh and I'm a bit of an original cross breed, age 3 years. I love people, but am not too keen on other dogs, or cats. I have been in kennels now since August 2009 waiting for my forever home but no one has come along for me yet, I keep my paws crossed, it can't be long now surely. All I want is a nice warm bed, a couple of walks a day, some good food and lots of cuddles, I'll be a good lad, and I don't take up much room, honest! Ring my carers and come along and meet me, I sooo deserve a chance!!
Maisie is a Rottweiler x girl and is about 1 year old. She is yet another unclaimed stray who finds herself looking for a loving forever home, but hopefully with a bit of help she will not be waiting long.
Maisie would probably be happier as an only dog as we have found she is ok with some but doesn't like others but she's a lovely girl and really does deserve the chance of a new family who will love and care for her.

Jake is a Staffy and is 5 years old. He's asked us to put this on the website. Jake here, I'm a bundle of fun and I love to play. I'm safe here at the kennels but I would love a home and family I could love. So please pick me. Your free to come and see me and play with me, just call my carers and I will wait here and look forward to seeing you.
Just so you know we make every effort to put the right dog with the owner and as importantly the right owner with the dog. Based on our assessment of a dog and your life style etc we always try to make sure you will be happy with your new dog and your new dog will be happy living with his/her new family. If things go wrong we are here to help and advise for the lifetime of the dog and if a situation occurs where you can not look after the dog any more we will always take the dog back into our care. In fact this is a condition in the adoption contract. Thankfully this doesn't happen very often at all but when you adopt a dog from Dunroamin K9 Rescue you have our help, support and advice for the lifetime of your new family member.
Tessa is Black Labrador and is approximately 10 years old. She is now safe in our care after her sad excuse of a person stroke previous owner abandoned her in a horse box in a field.
Could this be something to do with the fact that she has quite a few huge mammary tumours we ask
ourselves!. Tessa is in a temporary foster home at the moment and has since been seen by a vet who needs to further investigate these tumours. Tessa is a lovely classic black lab and we will do everything we can for her.
Update on Tessa
Tessa was booked into the vets for the removal of two of the larger mammary tumours because the risk of them bursting was getting higher in our vets opinion. At this point we don't know whether they are benign or malignant. Unfortunately during the operation it was found that Tessa had Pyometra and never showed any signs at all. This serious life threatening desease of the uterus changed the operation from lump removal to an emergency spay to completely remove the infection. If left she would die.
The veterinary surgeon couldn't remove the lumps at the same time because of obvious risk of spread of infection.
Tessa got through the operation and is doing fine in her foster home. We'll keep you posted.
This is not the first time we have come across Pyometra.
Rosie the lovely Spaniel Collie X, went for her routine spay and advanced Pyometra was found. Spaying her removed the desease. Rosie aka Rose, girly girl and ROSIE is a few years younger than Tessa. (Rosie is in a home)
On a similar subject, Henry Holding went for his removals and he was found to have testicular cancer.
We still have our fingers crossed that it hadn't already spread but this was well over a year ago and Henry is doing fine. Thank god for his neuter. (Henry lives with Rose)
Patch is a Parson's Russell and is a fit and healthy 11 year old. He finds himself looking for a new home because sadly his loving owner died. Patch is a lovely dog, very friendly and loves playing ball. He has been in kennels for 1 month since his owner died and has now come into our care. He is still in kennels so an adoption or foster home is very much needed for lovely Patch. Please ring for more details.
Barney is a small x breed boy and is about 6 months old. Young and Fun!!
Zen is a male greyhound of approximately 1 year old. His previous owners took him out for a ride in the car during the heavy snow and abondoned him in a rural village, luckily for Zen a kind gentleman who witnessed this incident, took him in and cared for him for several days until the Dog Warden could collect him. Zen is a very well mannered young dog who will sit and give a paw. He is also very good on the lead. Don't forget it's a myth that Greyhounds need a lot of exercise, they are happy with a couple of 20 minute walks a day, and make very loving faithfull pets.
Gracie is an Akita and is approximately 6 years old and is a gentle and graceful girl. She is a friendly people dog, is well mannered, and as you can see from her photos's she always appears to be smiling. If you like Akita's you will love Gracie!! Feel free to contact us and arrange to meet this lovely dog.
Chester is a Staffordshire bull terrier cross and is about 18 months old. He loves to play as you will see from his pictures on our SlideShow further down on this page.
Charlie is a gorgeous 1 year old cross breed, possibly Hungarian Vizsla x Greyhound. Charlie is a very laid back dog and is a gentle soul, who just loves to be with you and hates to go back in his kennel bless him. We feel he would make an ideal family companion, come along and see for yourself, Charlie will be very pleased to meet you.
Storm
Brad came from the same pound as Sullie, and was also at risk of being put to sleep, the poor lad has earned the affectionate nickname of 'Bat Ears' at kennels, he's only a little lad and is very well behaved. Brad is approximately 2 years old, and would make an ideal family companion.
I'm Ollie, the dog warden asked Dunroamin to look after me after my previous owners didn't look for me. My carers can't work out exactly what I'm crossed with and are saying I'm a 'one off' not that it matters, I'm a happy young dog, approximately 7 months old, and I love to play ball in the paddock, I'm ok in kennels, safe and looked after, but nothing beats a home of your own, hope I'm not waiting too long.
Sullie is a four year old beautiful cream Lurcher boy who came in to our care on Sunday 18 July, just in the nick of time as he was going to be put to sleep on the Monday. He is a very loving dog, another one who doesn't realise he's too big to sit on your lap!! Come along and meet this handsome chap, you wont be disappointed.
Bud is a 2/3 year old Jack Russell boy.
Zeke
Zeke is now in our care living with a very experienced foster carer.
He was bought from a farm last friday but the existing family dog wouldnt accept him, so he came to us on Monday, far too young to have left his mum but his sad excuse of a breeder new this but took the money over Zeke and probably his brothers and sisters welfare.
This baby Border Collie boy will stay in our care until he is fully vaccinated, and can be rehomed in approximately 4-6 weeks.

Can we say a big thank you from many dogs in our care to a dog warden called Andrew who has helped make them safe and helped to give them a future.
It's not about numbers, it's about 'Mans Best Friend', and he is with us in saying that every single unclaimed stray deserves a chance to be loved.

We have great dogs in our care and we take lots of photo's of them so we have decided to create a 'Looking and Waiting' page on our web site for the extra snaps of our homeless dogs. Coming soon!!!
This was the day we picked Misty up from the council pound.
She had been found by the dog warden in a dreadful state seven days previously.
She is now in a temporary foster home.
More details will follow.
Misty Update 8/04/09
Misty is doing really well in her foster home and is slowly learning to trust. She loves the company of other dogs and because of the confidence she gets from being around other loved dogs we would only re-home Misty in a doggie household. Update pictures very soon.
Misty Update
Misty is now in her loving forever home. Her foster carer just couldn't let her go and has decided to adopt her. She will have a happy life along with her new brother and sisters especially Kodi who Misty has developed a really special bond with and visa versa.
As we all know, it is wonderful to feel loved...... and great to feel safe and happy.... Misty is home!

Daisy
6 month old X breed.
I was found wandering, frightened and alone. I was picked up by the dog warden and taken to the pound. Every day I waited, waited for my owner to come and get me but no-one came, my heart sank. I couldn't understand why, I had been a good girl, did they not love me anymore? My seven days passed so quickly, what would be my fate? Thankfully I was taken to BeeJay Dog Rescue , now I have a second chance to find that special someone who will love me so much they will keep me safe and never let me go. Could you be that special person, if so ring Jane on 07766586720. Thank you.
Joe
6/7yr old medium sized Breed
I'm affectionate, loyal and very, very grateful to BeeJay Dog Rescue for caring enough to help me find someone who cares, someone who will look into my eyes and see the love that lies within. I'm just a big heart on four legs.
Please ring my friend Jane on 07766586720. Thank you
Thanks to Google for these amazing facts. If you have any amazing dog facts please send them in to us.
Henry just wants to clarify one of the amazing facts above. Normal chocolate is poisonous to dogs BUT he wants to make sure you know you can buy doggy chocolate!!!!!!including doggy easter eggs......Thanks for that Henry
This is Max. He's not a real dog but he has a real story.
He was found wondering the streets and taken to the council pound. That is day 1 of the 7 days his owners have to collect him and pay a fee before they can get him back. After the 7 days he will either be rehomed or put to sleep. Max is microchipped so after being scanned the dog warden rang his owners and they came to pick him up and take him home.
Point is the only reason Max was reunited with his loving owners is because he was microchipped.
The cost of a microchip is less than the charge the council pound will demand for just a few days of looking after your lost dog.
All dogs adopted or fostered from Dunroamin K9 Rescue are microchipped but we think every dog should be microchipped.
PS
We also know some cats and kittens that need some love in a home they can call their own. Can you help, or do you know someone who would give a rescue cat/kitten a loving forever home? Please get in touch with Second Chance Feline Rescue if you can or you do.
